Cathedral Primary (Motherwell) has reimagined a once-common Scottish classroom approach - helping achieve an ‘excellent’ rating for Learning, Teaching and Assessment in its May 2025 inspection.

In this webinar, CfTE Teacher Associate Graeme Young shares his model for Primary 3-7 pedagogy, exploring how a strong understanding of why we teach the way we do can lead to meaningful, evidence-based improvements for children.

By drawing on classroom-based research, we’ll explore why philosophical thinking is more than a good idea; it offers something rich and exciting for pupils and their teachers in school and beyond.

The presentation begins with a brief introduction to the Swedish school system and then examines key initiatives that support research–practice collaboration. These include the National Professional Program and the ULF initiative (Education, Learning, Research), alongside practice placement partnerships in preschools and schools, and a graduate school focused on practice-based educational research. The presentation also explores local collaborations that illustrate how research–practice partnerships are implemented in practice.
